How things have changed

‘A supernatural drama about a half-demon, half-human girl who ventures into the seedy underbelly of an alternative Coventry, where demons rule and vampires are their pets, in order to save her male friend from their clutches.’

This was our original idea, and from that only two major things have changed, the fact that we turned our demons into vampires and the loss of a character. Our idea seems to have undersone a lot less changes than other groups. Some groups have abandoned ideas althogether, and most have undergone some signifcant change.

I like our idea, its ridiculous, kitsch, b-movie a bit silly and a bit sad. Unfortunately mine and Tara love of b-movies, and in turn its growing influence in our film did not translate to a room full of artist. Our film was originally intended to be serious but our influences came more from the cheaply made horror films than hollywood so obviously our film veered towards that.

The removal of the character was just part of us trying to eliminate dialogue, and i think this shows us broadening our scope as film makers. We were willing to make a hard decision.

Power, Spectacle, Memory… Bettie Perry ?

So, the research for this began with power, spectacle and memory in 310mc, although none of the artefacts i made for this have necessarily influenced Bettie Perry i am going to see what lines i can draw between these and my film.

Power – I think power is one of the films main points. All the relationships are based on power and the entire story is of Tristiana trying to have power over the world. Alan tries to exert this power over betty to make her stay. There is also power we give the power to the women in the piece,

Spectacle – The blood, the dressed, the heels, the teeth, our vampires are pure spectacle. Its all glamour and death and i love that. Everything is big, bmovie and silly.

Memory- The memory of her mother is part of what guides this film. But on a bigger scale the collective memory of the term vampire helps the audience to watch this film.

Editing Process.. criticism, nihilism

The editing programme isn’t really much to do with me, Tara does an edit, i say what needs changing, she goes back in and thats how it goes. All i can do during this process is offer advice and opinions, which is the same with everybody else in the group. Being producer and being responsible for so much in the begging it seems so odd to just sit back and do nothing.

Will Bettie Perry itself lead me into the future ?

All these different ideas on how i can use different things i have learnt during this process to get me a job, but something i haven’t looked at is the idea that Bettie Perry could be a part of that. One thing that has always been part of the plan is having a website to keep promoting it after university. The process of creating the disheveled productions website taught me that

Interim Critique

The interim critique did not go as i had expected. The edit wasn’t as far along as i would’ve liked, and we all knew this but unfortunately, i think some of the people in the room seemed to think that it was just badly edited. We barely received any comments, and we were also the only group that got no feedback from steve (even upon emailing him asking for feedback we didn’t get any)

Now all we can do it get all the shit sorted, and show them all wrong. We we’re always the underdogs, we were one of the most ambitious groups, and the only one that took more work than ours was the musical that failed.

We spent more time on idea and storyline, and we went against the norm for short films, we put in more dialoge, more story. Why ? Because we didn’t want to make a cookie cutter short film. Which, unfortunately,  believe some people have. But i think our marks will ultimately suffer for trying something different.

In regards to other peoples work, Qubul looked really good, but it didn’t excite me, but i don’t think that is the point of that film. Joannes piece is by far the best, but thats what i expected. The animation was good, but too long. I loved the chick film, it was cute and heartwarming. Augusts film was well made, and interesting. I am unsure about the graphic novel film and i don’t think that clip did it justice, so i’m going to keep an open mind on that one

Edit Two

Edit two was mainly the shaping up of the previous edit, some major issues like the neck snapping sounds were put in, speed up of the neck snaps etc.

There are still major things that need changing, shots need going on, a scene with luffed lines is still there, colour correction in a major way, sound levels in a major way. I am now starting to get concerned that the edit just wont be done, as friday now seems to incredibly close.
